Apparently nobody in news central found that odd, as the evening’s newscasts, podcasts, posts and tweets were preoccupied with other critical issues. Most were busy communicating dire warnings and hand-wringing over the impending blizzard in New England. Because it’s winter, and these folks have never seen a blizzard before. Not one like this anyway.

Along with the usual New Year’s resolutions about exercising, getting more sleep, and being more patient with the kids, progressives should add better communications to their list. We have an historic opportunity to frame the public debate this year in terms of social justice, human rights, and opportunity for all. But that requires being smarter and more deliberate in the way we talk about the nation’s priorities and future. At the very least, we need to stop using certain words and phrases that erode support for progressive values and policies. Here’s my list. I’ll ask for yours at the end of this post.

Do you want to know why the GOP was so screwed up in 2012? It was eaten up with cronyism.
Many conservative leaders, such as Morton Blackwell have blasted the culture of crony consultants in the GOP. If the GOP is ever to be competitive again at the national level, it has to welcome competition back to its ranks.
The GOP needs to start with new leadership. If the GOP is ever to be competitive again, it cannot rely on Washington insiders to lead the Party. Movement conservatives must take over the Party.

| A 1991 U.S. Muslim Brotherhood strategic memorandum, which says its “work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within,” lists ICNA as one of “our organizations and the organizations of our friends.” The memo refers to productive meetings between ICNA and the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood “in an attempt to reach a unity of merger.” ICNA has long held its annual conferences in conjunction with the Muslim American Society, an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, in apparent fulfillment of this objective. ICNA has not abandoned its Islamist ideology since then. Its 2010 handbook laid out a five-level strategy towards achieving a “united Islamic state, governed by an elected khalifah in accordance with the laws of shari’ah (Islamic law),” right in line with the Muslim Brotherhood doctrine of gradualism. Its last conference in December featured at least a dozen Islamist speakers, including ones that have supported Hamas and have ties to the Brotherhood. (Among the event’s sponsors were Turkish Airlines and the DISH Network.) |
